My Mediterranean food story in Greece!

Hi Guys!

Here is my food story from my short visit to Athens, Greece in summer 2016!

My culinary experience in Athens was so unexpectedly great. At first I though it will be just about yogurt and salad, (hahaa, I mean the kind of food I was not raised with) but obviously it was more than simple seasoning! Greek food is similar to Turkish food or other middle eastern food which means that there are plenty of veggie options. There is something about how Greek food have all the ingredients combined, and produce the most amazing, unique taste, that you will never forget. In science we call this an "emergent" taste! >.<

Here I show you the timeline of my culinary journey in Athens. Of course when picking these places, I always google searched the most "local sounding", non pretentious kitchen that serves food from heart.

Day 1
Cretan food
A place called "Kriti", Near Omonia Metro station

This is the amazing taste of wheat grains, which tasted like rice, cooked with herbs, chillies, and some spices, and then wrapped with grape leaves, topped with olive oil, and served with a spoonfull of yogurt. This is called "Dolma" and actually one of my favorite meditteranean food. I remember that I ate the similar one when dining at the Turkish restaurant. As you take a bite of Dolma together with the yogurt, you can taste the sour, tangy, sweet, and savory from all the elements of dolma.

This one is Fried cheese, but not just simply fried. It is wrapped with pastry first. And then topped with honey, black and white sesame. Sweet and savory at the same time. This is the top winning appetizer. The cheese that they used was not feta, but rather had the texture of the mixture of feta and mozzarella.

Mushroom salad, it was the "salad of the day" recommended by the chef. It was not just mushroom chunks, but it has a great flavor combination of yogurt, olive oil, and other herbs for dressing. When you bite each piece, you will feel like this is something you want to eat again and again.

Fresh fried anchovies. Of course, I was aiming only for this. The simplicity of salted, fried fish with squeeze of lemon juice is very heartening

Then, we also got free dessert. Something like a custard filled pastry, with sugar syrup. Typical Mediterranean sweet. I think this is called Galaktobureko!

Day 2
Dinner at the place called "Pita"

This Tomato salad was sooo great, as they used the freshest tomatoes and olives. The flavour combination with the rusk (toasted bread), salty cheese, and oregano.
This was the veggie pita I got, with tomatoes, rucola , mustard and honey sauce.

This is what my boyfriend got, the pork gyros, with fries and some signature sauce.

Day 3
The seafood platter from "To Agistri"
This seafood platter was okay for us. The place was located in the Agistri island. It was okay, great in terms of taste and portion (as they advertised it for 2 people), but it was missing the Greek herbs taste. We ate the whole thing anyway, and they gave us free watermelons as desert.

Greek salad
I like this place called "Pita" so much, that I came back again the next day just to eat the Greek salad. Yummy!

Going for the one and only "Greek Yogurt"
The most famous and delicious Greek yogurt with honey and walnuts. The place is called "Stani", which is also near the Omonia station : M Kotopouli Omonia Athens 10431, Greece.
This place has the most authentic taste and also serves other varieties of pastries.

Day 4
Our last dinner in Athens was also memorable. We went to this place near Panepistimio station.
Mashed chickpeas and split beans, with sweet onion and lemon

Dolma, again, but this time the yogurt sauce is mixed with some herbs
the Bogue - Fry fish with some herbs

I think If I ever want to come back to Greece, I will be just visiting for the food... And of course I would love to stay longer and go to the other islands!

Until next time...

A Somber Visit to Dachau Concentration Camp

In July 2017, I had the chance to visit Dachau concentration camp when I was travelling in Munich. It was a memorable , a somber visit as I learned a lot about the world war history particularly during the time of Nazi occupation which has influenced the world we are are living in today. The buildings, the land , the whole  camp site brought out such cold, unfortunate, tormented atmosphere and everything took place there was clearly depicted in the museum and guided tours. For those who are not familiar with what a concentration camp is and its story during the Nazi occupation, here is a brief introduction: It was initially the camp built for the purpose to accommodate political prisoners when the Third Reich was founded in 1933. Adolf Hitler was the chancellor of this Reich and the leader of The National Socialist party. In the beginning of his dictatorship, things were settled to improve Hitler's power in Germany by killing the leader of the SA (Sturmabteilung...

Finally, I got engaged! - A story of Chinese Indonesian Engagement Ceremony

Hi guys! It has been so long since I wrote last time. Yes, the whole 2017-18 has been a busy year for me as I tried to get my life in Sydney settled. I can say that now I am based in Sydney. It is my life now, being together with Eugene (My fiance) who has lived here for almost all his life and working as a researcher which I found living in Sydney gives me a lot of opportunities to pursue this career. So, I am writing this post to tell you a story about my engagement, which was done in a very Chinese way, the ceremony, tradition, and of course some details of how the decision to get engaged was made. My fiance and I are both Indonesian (we were born in Indonesia) but we also come from family who still maintain Chinese tradition and rituals at home (e.g celebrating chinese new year, keeping an altar of our ancestors, finding good dates based on your chinese zodiac, etc.). I was told that 300  myyears ago, my great, great grandparents migrated from China to Indonesia. Some fami...
